The resulting data then allows you to quantify the reaction kinetics. This is true even though the starch complex is not directly generated from the oxidation.Īside from the qualitative observation of the increasingly blue reaction vessel, you can periodically measure the starch concentration through spectrophotometry. Thus, for the entirety of the experiment, oxidation determines the progress of the dark blue hue. Additionally, once the reduction ceases, the oxidation continues to serve as the rate-determining step, as both the formation of the triiodide and the starch complex occur relatively quickly. The first reaction, the oxidation, occurs much slower than the reduction, making it the rate-determining step during that first phase of the reaction. The structure involves the amylose helix of the starch wrapping around the chain of triiodide ions. As a side note, due to the striking dark blue of the complex, a mixture of iodine and iodide called Lugol’s iodine is used to test for trace amounts of starch. This complex is responsible for the increasing dark blue of the reaction vessel. This triiodide ion then forms a complex with the starch. They react with one another to form the triiodide ion: Afterward, significant quantities of iodide and iodine exist at the same time. This back and forth between iodide and iodine continues until all thiosulfate oxidizes away. Importantly, as the reaction produces diatomic iodine, the thiosulfate re-reduces the iodine back to iodide: Once the solutions mix, the hydrogen peroxide oxidizes the iodide into diatomic iodine: The Chemistry of the Iodine Clock Iodine Clock Redox and Kineticsīefore the three solutions mix into one, each ionic species dissociates into their respective ions:ĭuring the reaction, K +, Na +, and HSO 4 – do not participate, remaining as spectator ions. Aside from that, the reductant concentration tends to be kept low, as very little is required, while the starch tends to be in excess. Thus, most lab procedures studying reaction kinetics will vary the concentrations of one or more of these species. Potassium iodide (KI) serves as the salt, while sulfuric acid (H 2SO 4) provides the required acidity. Importantly, gloves, safety goggles, and caution should be observed when using sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide to prevent chemical burns.Īs we’ll find out in a later section, the kinetics of the reaction depends on the concentrations of acid, iodide, and oxidant. The most common variant of the Iodine Clock Reaction uses sodium thiosulfate (Na 2S 2O 3) as the reductant and hydrogen peroxide (H 2O 2) as the oxidant. Once the solutions mix, the reaction begins. Second Solution: Iodine Salt, Reductant, Water. As mentioned before, these components become allocated between three different solutions according to these specifications: To perform the Iodine Clock Reaction, you need an iodine salt, a reductant, an oxidant, an acid, starch, and water as a solvent. Early stage of the dark blue color transformation of the iodine clock Iodine Clock Procedure In Egypt, the darkness of nighttime often arrives rather suddenly, similar to rapid dark color change in this reaction. Interestingly, some chemists colloquially call this reaction the “Egyptian Night” experiment. This color change corresponds to the progress of the reaction, which allows you to visually witness the kinetics in a way that most reactions do not provide. Once the solutions combine, however, the mixture gradually turns from clear to dark blue to near-black. In this experiment, you prepare two simple, transparent solutions. For this, the reaction persists as a staple of general chemistry lab demonstrations. The Iodine Clock Reaction is a classic chemistry experiment that demonstrates many basic principles of kinetics and redox chemistry. In this lab tutorial, we learn about the iodine clock reaction, including its procedure, underlying chemistry, and data analysis. Born in 1935 on Bonnie Blue plantation in Tunica, Mississippi, apprenticing with Sonny Boy Williamson II and Howlin’ Wolf, and schooled by Muddy Waters, James ‘Super Harp’ Cotton became a mentor to harp players around the globe as he brought the delta blues into mainstream rock ‘n roll. This new film capture’s America’s soul as the blues becomes interpreted in jazz, big band, rock and roll, punk, hip-hop and rap. In between are tours with Janis Joplin, Paul Butterfield and sessions with the Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Santana, Steve Miller, B.B. Cotton’s life tracks a swath of America’s history - from the post-depression cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta to tough Chicagoland’s era of brilliant artistic reinvention to today’s live music scene in Austin, Texas. THE FILM: "Bonnie Blue: James Cotton’s Life in the Blues" is an emotionally evocative feature documentary that portrays the untold story of James Cotton, a legend whose musical influence shaped the Chicago Blues style having been mentored with the originators of the Delta blues tradition. Starting from version 1.6 of ACC, the pressure window with which the Pirelli tire offers the optimal level of grip has narrowed. Indeed, in the presentation of the new physics of the simulator on youtube, Aristotelis Vasilakos (vehicle dynamics developer of Kunos simulations) in dry track conditions indicates an optimal pressure range between 27.4 and 28.0 psi. When returning to the pits, it is possible to monitor the temperature on the inside (I = inside), in the center (M = middle) and on the outside (O = outside) of the tires. Keep in mind that the temperature difference between the inner side and the outer side of the tires must not exceed 9° C at the front and not exceed 5° C at the rear. By regulation, in fact, GT3 cars use electric blankets to preheat the tires up to a maximum of 70° C (for more information see here). Whenever you start a qualifying session or a race, the temperature of the tires is approximately 65° C. This guide goes through every aspect of your GT3 class car setup (for information on tuning GT4 cars, click here). It will show you how to properly change the setup and explain how each change will affect the performance of your car. It will also help you understand which points to focus your attention on, such as ideal tire pressure and more.īelow are explanations on how each aspect contained in the tire setup section affects the car’s behavior (and also what you should aim for for a good tire setup).įor optimal performance, you should aim for tire pressure between 27.0 and 28.0 psi (1.86 ÷ 1.93 bar) during the race (as explained here), although Pirelli indicates that the pressure is optimal 29.0 psi (almost 2 bar). As for temperatures, the slick operating window is very wide (from 40° C up to 130° C dry tires offer decent grip) however, the optimal range is narrower and is between 70° C and 90° C. Unlike some racing games (F1 2020, Forza Motorsport 7, Gran Turismo Sport, etc …), Assetto Corsa Competizione has a much higher amount of car tuning options that you can get your hands on. If you’re just starting out and don’t understand at all how each configuration change affects the car’s behavior, don’t panic. The admin on Sim Sport Racing Adam Isailovic aka Skaven Zverov, on the official ACC forum, has created a very useful setup guide for beginners of this simulator. Switching to Assetto Corsa Competizione for the first time is a daunting prospect. The learning curve is objectively steep and the driving physics extremely realistic and hardcore. Many things will cause a headache and discourage new ACC players, including the safety rating, which is the system for evaluating the correctness of a driver when he is in a fight with an opponent, important for accessing most online servers. This is the perfect guide for new simracers or for those who want to start modifying their car setup on Assetto Corsa Competizione. With the release of the console version of ACC, many drivers who use these platforms have purchased the Kunos simulator. This has led to a huge influx of new players online, which is great for the ACC community! DO NOT ORDER THIS ACCESSORY if you live in these locations. The sling attachments are on the side of the. It may not be the best option for families where the parents are native Japanese speakers (that would be like showing Dora the Explorer to a native Spanish-speaking family). Simply watching these DVDs will not make your child fluent in Japanese (there’s not much conversation in the videos). I think these DVD’s would also be great to show at a bilingual/immersion language school. It might be wonderful for a family planning to host a student visiting from Japan, or a bilingual family who wants to expose their children to as much Japanese as possible. There really isn’t a lot of resources out there for teaching kids Japanese right now! This set is a great option for a family who wants to expose their children to other languages at a young age (Dino Lingo offers DVDs in MANY languages other than Japanese too). Overall, I am thankful to Dino Lingo for creating this program for teaching children basic Japanese. Here’s a sample video of what the shows are like: – I thought there were some wasted minutes between segments with unrelated animations – The graphics/animations are not up to par with other children’s shows (don’t expect Disney quality) Some areas I thought could be improved upon were: – I can tell a native Japanese speaker is saying the words – Lots of repetition which is great for younger learners Here are some things I liked about the DVD’s: I noticed my 2-year old son saying the Japanese words out loud the second time… so repetition works! They liked the first DVD enough to where we watched it twice in a row. My son was excited about all the dinosaurs and vehicles used in the show. Of course, my children wanted to watch the DVD’s right away. My family decided the online subscription would be a better fit for our needs because. There are flashcards for numbers, colors, animals, body parts, etc. Daily conversations, greetings and animals are included in all five DVDs. You can use an app on streaming players such as Apple TV, Chromecast, or Roku, on Android and iOS phones and tablets, and on some Samsung smart TVs. One good thing about the newer DirecTV Stream service is that you don’t have to rent a box. More recently, HBO Max and Discovery+ were merged into a single streaming entity, called Max, although you can still subscribe to Discovery+ separately.Īll of the services come with on-demand shows and movies, and unlimited cloud DVR storage. Last year Discovery and WarnerMedia completed a merger the new entity is called Warner Bros. Those both represent $5-a-month increases.Ĭustomers with legacy plans also got hit with monthly price increases of either $5 or $10, with plan prices ranging from $85 to $115 a month. The Ultimate plan (with Starz) now costs $110 a month, while the Premier plan (with Max, Cinemax, and Showtime) is $155 a month. The service’s Entertainment plan now costs $75 a month, a $5-a-month price hike, while the Choice plan-the cheapest plan that provides regional sports networks-jumped $10, to $100 a month. The company raised prices on all plans at the beginning of 2023, making DirecTV Stream among the most expensive streaming alternatives. DirecTV Stream-essentially the DirecTV satellite service without the dish-is the name for the company’s earlier AT&T TV and AT&T TV Now streaming services. The top-tier package includes premium channels such as Max, Showtime, and Starz.ĪT&T has been doing a lot of rejiggering lately, including spinning off its DirecTV satellite TV business into a new entity, also called DirecTV. What you get: Plans start around $75 per month for a mix of live TV stations and cable channels. In general, video streaming services have been adding more local broadcast channels, such as ABC and CBS, but these are not always available in all communities. To find out what you can receive, go to each company’s website, plug in your ZIP code, and see what’s available in your area. The content can vary by region, especially when it comes to local channels. Most of these cable replacement services let you add genre- or theme-based channel packs, plus premium networks such as Max or Showtime, for an additional monthly fee. All except Philo combine at least a few live local channels with a smattering of cable networks, at prices that typically range from about $45 to $70 per month. The services that stream regular cable channels include AT&T’s DirecTV Stream, the sports-focused FuboTV service, Hulu + Live TV, Philo, Sling TV, and Google’s YouTube TV. Instead, these services try to replicate what you’d get with a traditional pay-TV package, but at a lower price. These cable replacement services are very different from streaming services such as Apple TV+, Max, and Netflix, which let you watch individual TV series and movies on-demand. That’s why we took care to list all the major services you can stream premium live TV on, for how much, and what you’re getting for your money. The downside: While consumers now have viable alternatives to traditional TV providers, the growing selection of live streaming services has added complexity to the decision. Instead, consumers can choose a streaming service without paying cable TV prices or signing unbreakable commitments. This isn’t just a forecast-some smaller regional cable companies, including WOW and Mid-Rivers, have dropped TV offerings altogether. Here’s a sobering statistic for cable TV executives: Major cable and satellite TV providers have lost about 25 million subscribers over the past decade, according to the research firm eMarketer. An hour was plenty of time to enjoy the Basin and Blossoms. It took us 15 minutes to get to the MLK side, pedaling into the breeze, but once there, it was a leisurely pedal around the Basin with the wind at our backs. The reception at this particular Embassy Suites was the best I have ever been to! Really nice food options and different each day we never waited in long lines and the food never ran out while we were there. The evenings reception was so fun for our kiddos too and again, arrive when it starts to avoid lines. We ate breakfast between 6:30-7:30 am everyday and never waited in lines. Like all things in DC, the earlier you arrive, the less people and vehicle traffic you have to navigate. Breakfast was so good (loads of options), but again, gets busy closer to 8:00 am. We swam before 6:00 pm every day and had plenty of room to swim. A few tips for families: the pool is on the smaller side and gets busy the later in the day you go. Just factor that cost into your trip and avoid the headache. (We parked in a LAZ and then free parking on the street Sunday!!) We paid for valet parking-totally worth it. This place has the possibility to be great with location and extras but the service needs to improve. Again…just keep tripping over themselves. I asked her for some and she kept telling me the wheat AND sour dough were white bread. The lady attendant and I went round and round regarding white bread. Don’t dare ask if they have any extra chocolate muffins and white bread. The breakfast was good but the staff was mean. When I went to the front desk to inquire they told me the pool attendant was on break and he couldn’t give me towels because he couldn’t go behind the pool attendants back. Took my kids to the pool and they were out of pool towels. Called back and had to wait another 15 minutes. Then when we pulled out the sofa bed, it wasn’t made, they didn’t leave us pillows for it. I had to call twice to get some then finally walked the halls and raided a housekeeping cart. Once we got our room they only left us 3 towels, 1 hand towel and 1 wash rag.
